Imagine trading the turquoise tides of Zanzibar for the golden horizon of the African savannah in under an hour. This 3-day flying safari to Mikumi National Park is the ultimate “bush and beach” bridge, offering a high-impact wildlife experience without the exhaustion of long-haul trekking.
Your adventure starts with an early morning flight from Zanzibar. As the island’s coral reefs fade behind you, the landscape shifts into the rugged green of mainland Tanzania. Upon landing at the Mikumi airstrip, you are met by our specialist guide and move straight into your first game drive. By mid-morning, you are already traversing the Mkata Floodplain, home to massive buffalo herds and the park’s famous “dwarf” elephants.
Afternoon Immersion and the Wellworth Sunset After a productive morning, we head to Wellworth Mikumi Wildlife Lodge for a hot lunch and check-in. The heat of the day is best spent by the lodge’s pool, which acts as a “natural television” overlooking a busy waterhole. In the late afternoon, we venture back out for a sunset drive. This is the prime time to visit the Hippo Pools, where you’ll witness these giants waking up for their nocturnal grazing, set against a backdrop of the park’s iconic baobab trees.
We depart the lodge at first light, coffee in hand, to catch the predators while they are still on the move. Sunrise is when the Mikumi lions are most active, often seen patrolling the tracks before the sun gets too high. This early start ensures we are the only vehicle in the most remote corners of the park, giving you an intimate look at the “Little Serengeti” before the day-trippers arrive.
Midday Exploration and the Return to Zanzibar Following a hearty bush breakfast or a late brunch at the lodge, we conduct a final sweep of the woodland areas to spot the more elusive species like the Eland or the Greater Kudu. After a final lunch overlooking the plains, your guide will transfer you back to the airstrip. You’ll board your bush plane and be back on the white sands of Zanzibar by late afternoon, feeling as though you’ve lived an entire week’s worth of adventure in just 48 hours.

| Photography | 2 “Golden Hour” windows. | Hard, midday light only. |
By staying overnight at Wellworth Mikumi Wildlife Lodge, you double your chances of seeing a kill or rare nocturnal behavior. At Tanzania Safari Experience, we always tell our guests: The bush is a slow-burn experience; don’t rush the magic.
Comparison: Flying vs. Driving to Mikumi
We often get asked if the flight is worth the extra cost. Let’s look at the reality:
By Flight: 1 hour from Zanzibar. You arrive fresh, energized, and ready to photograph wildlife by 9:30 AM.
By Ferry & Road: 6–8 hours. You deal with Dar es Salaam traffic, ferry delays, and arrive at the park exhausted just as the sun is setting.
For a 2-day trip, flying isn’t a luxury; it’s a mechanical necessity to ensure you actually spend your time with the animals, not the asphalt.
Our tours are top-notch but give you great value. The price we tell you upfront covers most of the costs for one person, like flights and all transfers.

EXCELLENT Based on 3 reviews Posted on Nico LVerified Safari May 2026 This company exceeded everything we’d hoped for. From the start, the tour operator had everything covered — a detailed itinerary laid out well in advance, quick responses to any questions, and a genuine attentiveness that made the whole thing feel effortless. The accommodation was seriously impressive. Not what I was expecting at all — comfortable, well-appointed, and luxurious. We also spent time right in the heart of the bush. A proper treat. The two people who really made this trip were our guide Mariki and photographer Agnes. Mariki’s knowledge of the bush and animal behaviour is something else — he always seemed to know exactly where to go, and his instincts paid off every single time. Agnes has a brilliant eye and captured shots we could never have got ourselves. As for the wildlife — we saw far more than we ever imagined we would. Elephants, lions, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippos — the lot. As a first safari, I couldn’t have asked for more. Would recommend without hesitation.Posted on Godson GVerified Great Experience with Tanzania Safari Experience We had an amazing safari with Tanzania Safari Experience, and honestly the whole trip was put together really well by Laurent and his team. From our first message to the last day, they were easy to reach, quick to reply, and clear about everything. The plan made sense, the timing was smooth, and we didn’t have to stress about anything. Uncle J was a big part of what made it special. He knows the parks incredibly well and seems to notice things before anyone else. He’d position the vehicle perfectly for photos and often got us to sightings before the crowds built up. We were lucky to see [your highlights: migration / lions / cheetahs / elephants / a crossing], and every drive felt exciting and different. The vehicle was comfortable and in good shape, and everything ran on schedule. If you’re looking for a well-organized safari with a great guide, I’d definitely recommend Tanzania Safari Experience.Posted on Chris HVerified An absolutely brilliant tour / travel company What can I say. How do you explain PERFECTION. I will try. From the outset of our trip Ramadhan and Laurent were excellent. We gave them our requirements and budget and they prepared a program that was outstanding. The whole safari went like clockwork. We were met and briefed by Ramadhan on our arrival and introduced to our driver and guide extraordinar Ngoi. We visited Tarangier, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and the Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar. Absolutely brilliant trip, we saw the most extraordinary game. All the accommodation arranged for us was magnificent, especially the tented camps, where we were visited by a lion and elephant, scary but exhilarating. So if you are looking for an unforgettable experience look no further than Laurent and Ramadhan from Tanzania Safari Experience. They truly put clients first and foremost and deliver on their promises. Cheers from a very satisfied Chris and Terri HarveyVerified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust. Absolutely. The park is well-regulated, and traveling with a reputable operator like Tanzania Safari Experience ensures you have a dedicated guide and secure lodge accommodations throughout your stay.
You can see four of the five. Lions, elephants, leopards, and buffalo are common. However, there are no rhinos in Mikumi. If the rhino is a "must-see," you would need to visit the Ngorongoro Crater.
Domestic bush flights typically have a strict 15kg (33 lbs) limit, including hand luggage. It is best to use soft-sided duffel bags rather than hard-shell suitcases to fit into the small cargo pods.
You have only 1–2 days availableMikumi is the closest national park to Zanzibar by flight, making it the most realistic option for very short safaris. You can leave Zanzibar in the morning, enjoy quality game drives, and return with minimal disruption to your beach holiday.
There is no direct connection from Zanzibar to Mikumi National Park. However, you can take the taxi to Zanzibar, take the ferry to Dar es Salaam, walk to Magufuli SGR Stn, take the train to Kilosa, then take the taxi to Mikumi National Park.
Flying direct from Zanzibar to Mikumi National Park. - Departure time is 07h00 and the flight duration is 50 minutes. Arriving at the park, Mikumi Airstrip at 7:50am - You will meet your driver/guide and start your Game Drive. 8am to 1pm - We will picnic in the park and rest, then look for animals again.
Yes, Tanzania is a malaria-endemic zone. We strongly advise consulting a travel clinic before your trip and using insect repellent, especially during the evening hours at the lodge.
Physically, it's about 200 kilometers, but the "time distance" varies wildly. A flight takes 45-60 minutes, whereas the ferry-plus-drive combination can take a full day (10+ hours).
Our 3-day Marvels Safari is "Full Board," meaning breakfast, picnic lunches in the bush, and multi-course dinners at your lodge are all included.
