I have spent years guiding friends and guests through these dusty roads, and I can tell you that the “budget” way often gives you the most “real” Tanzanian feeling.
In this guide, I will show you how we do it at Tanzania Safari Experience. We are going to visit the “Big Three” of the North—Tarangire, Manyara, and the Ngorongoro Crater—in just three days. Put on your hat, grab your water, and let’s start the engine.

Day-by-Day Itinerary 3 Days Tanzania Budget Safari Itinerary
Your safari is carefully planned to maximize wildlife viewing while still giving you time to relax and enjoy the journey. Here’s what you can expect day by day.
Day 1: The Land of Giants (Tarangire National Park)
Tarangire is the home of the elephants. On Day 1, we drive from Arusha early in the morning. The air is cool, and you will see the Maasai herding their cattle along the road.
Tarangire National Park on Day 1 offers the best chance to see massive elephant herds and ancient Baobab trees, followed by a relaxing evening at Fanaka Campsite in Mto wa Mbu.
The Morning Drive
We leave Arusha around 8:00 AM. The drive takes about 2 to 3 hours. I love this drive because you pass through “Small Serengeti” plains before even reaching the gate.
Why Tarangire is Special
Most people rush to the Serengeti, but Tarangire has the highest concentration of elephants in the world during the dry season. I have seen herds of over 300 elephants here! We will spend the whole afternoon by the Tarangire River. This is the “fridge” of the park—every animal comes here to drink.
Look out for: The Pythons! Sometimes they hide in the trees near the Silale Swamp.
Evening at Fanaka Campsite & Lodges
After the sun starts to go down, we drive to Mto wa Mbu. This is a very special village where over 120 different tribes live together. We stay at Fanaka. It has a pool—yes, even on a budget!—and the rooms are clean and cool. The food here is “home-cooked” style. Try the Pilau (spiced rice) if they have it; it’s the best.

Day 2: Lake Manyara National Park
Lake Manyara is small, but don’t underestimate it. It’s one of the most diverse ecosystems in Tanzania—forest, lake, floodplains, and cliffs all in one place.
You start after breakfast and enter the park within minutes from Mto wa Mbu.
Lake Manyara offers compact but incredibly rich wildlife viewing, with a mix of forest animals, birdlife, and open savannah species in a short distance.
What You’ll See Here

- Tree-climbing lions (rare, but possible)
Why Manyara Confuses People
Some travelers expect constant big predators. That’s a mistake.
Manyara is about variety, not intensity. It’s where you slow down, notice details, and enjoy the scenery.
Pro Tip (Local Insight)
Watch the trees near the lake edge carefully. If lions are around, they’re often hidden above—not on the ground. Most people miss them because they never look up.
After your game drive, you return to Fanaka Campsite & Lodges for your second night.
This second night in the same place isn’t random—it saves you unnecessary packing, reduces costs, and keeps the safari relaxed.

Day 3: The "Eighth Wonder" (Ngorongoro Crater)
This is the big one. We wake up very early—around 6:00 AM. We want to be the first ones down in the Crater because that is when the lions are most active.
Day 3 is a full descent into the Ngorongoro Crater, a 600-meter deep caldera home to the rare Black Rhino and the densest predator population in Africa, ending back in Arusha.
The Descent
The drive up the crater rim is misty and cold. You will need your sweater here! Then, we drop 600 meters down into the floor. It is like entering a lost world.
Seeing the Black Rhino
There are only a few Black Rhinos left, and most of them live here. We will use our binoculars to find them. They are very shy, but the Crater is small enough that we usually get lucky.
The Picnic: we will have lunch at the Ngoitokitok Springs. Watch your chicken! The Black Kites (birds) are very clever and will try to steal it right out of your hand.
After lunch, we climb back out and drive back to Arusha, arriving around 5:00 PM or 6:00 PM.
