Arusha National Park Day Trip Safaris — Tanzania Safari

Home - Arusha National Park Day Trip Safaris

Safari Overview

Arusha is the “Safari Capital of the World,” but most travelers rush through it on their way to the Serengeti. I have spent years exploring the jagged ridges of Mount Meru and the hidden marshes of Ngurudoto, and I can tell you that an Arusha National Park Day Trip Safari is the most underrated experience in East Africa.

Our team at Tanzania Safari Experience views this park not as a “filler” day, but as a deep dive into ecosystems you won’t find elsewhere on the Northern Circuit. From the acrobatic flights of the Black-and-white Colobus monkeys to the silence of a canoe gliding past thousands of flamingos, this is a day for the senses.

What to Expect on an Arusha National Park Day Trip

An Arusha National Park day trip offers a compact yet diverse safari featuring walking tours, canoeing on Momella Lakes, and views of Mount Meru, ideal for spotting rare primates and birds.

The beauty of this park lies in its verticality. While the Serengeti is a flat sea of grass, Arusha National Park is a mountain-scape. You start your morning in the montane forest, where the air is cool and smells of damp earth and wild orchids. By noon, you are looking out over the Momella Lakes, and by afternoon, you’re standing on the rim of a volcanic crater.

Because of the park’s unique topography, it is one of the few places where we can take you on a walking safari. Stepping out of the vehicle and onto the same ground as a buffalo or giraffe changes your perspective on the wild entirely.

Pro-Tip: Most day-trippers arrive at 9:00 AM. If you want to see the rare albino baboons often spotted near the Ngurudoto forest, we recommend entering the gate by 6:30 AM. The early morning light hitting the “Ash Cone” of Mount Meru is also a photographer’s dream.

Day-by-Day Itinerary Arusha National Park Day Trip Safaris

Your safari is carefully planned to maximize wildlife viewing while still giving you time to relax and enjoy the journey. Here’s what you can expect day by day.

Day 1 | Arusha National Park

In the morning, we will collect you from your hotel in Arusha and take you to the Arusha National Park. The park has an incredible variety of fauna and flora, which cannot fail to impress. Hollywood also chose this region to film the movie “Hatari”, in which Hardy Kruger starred alongside the legendary John Wayne. Your day trip will include a visit to the Ngurdoto Crater. Buffaloes, waterbucks, giraffes, warthogs, zebras and baboons can be seen all year round, as well as many different bird species. At the Momella Gate, an armed ranger will be waiting for you to accompany you on the walking safari, which will give you a chance to experience the wildlife up close. Only a few other national parks in Tanzania give you such an opportunity, and it is something that should not be missed. Lunch will be taken at a picnic place and in the afternoon, you will continue your tour in the safari vehicle through the Arusha National Park. After plenty of time allocated for you to observe the wildlife, we will take you back to Arusha.

Everything You Need to Know About Your Safari

Every safari adventure begins with a question. Whether it’s your first or second time, it’s natural to wonder about the best time to visit, what to pack, or how the journey works. Here, we’ve answered the most common questions travelers ask before booking their Tanzania safari, so you can plan with confidence and look forward to unforgettable memories.

You can see three of the five: buffalo, leopard, and the occasional elephant. Lions and rhinos are not present in this park, making it safer for walking and canoeing.

Yes, a full day (8–10 hours) is perfect to cover the forest, the lakes, and a walking safari. It’s the ideal "introductory" day to Tanzania.

Wear neutral colors (khaki, green, or tan). Avoid bright colors and blue/black, which can attract tsetse flies. Sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots are essential.

Absolutely. The lakes do not have hippos or crocodiles, and our guides are trained to keep a respectful distance from the buffalo and waterbuck on the banks.

Yes, the safari can optionally start from Zanzibar, with a domestic flight included, or from Arusha if you are already on the mainland. This flexibility makes the safari ideal for travelers combining a beach holiday with a wildlife experience. Tanzania Safari Experience will arrange all transfers and flights if needed.

Our day trip Safari is "Full Board," meaning breakfast, picnic lunches in the bush, and multi-course dinners at your lodge are all included.

The dry season (June to October) offers the best wildlife viewing. However, the park is beautiful in the "Green Season" (November to May) when the birds are nesting and the forest is vibrant.
