7 Days Tanzania Camping Safari

Safari Overview

Ultimate 7 Days Tanzania Camping Safari (Real Experience Guide for 2026-2027 )

The scent of wild sage and woodsmoke—that is the true smell of Tanzania. If you want to feel the heartbeat of the African bush, you have to trade four walls for canvas.

At Tanzania Safari Experience, we’ve guided thousands of travelers through our home, and we know that a luxury lodge is nice, but waking up to the distant roar of a lion while inside a tent is life-changing. This is your guide to the ultimate 7-day camping safari, built from years of dusty boots and sunrise coffee.

The Reality of Shared Camping in Tanzania

A shared camping safari involves joining a small group of like-minded travelers in a 4×4 Land Cruiser, exploring Northern Tanzania’s premier parks, and sleeping in public campsites within or near the reserves.

The beauty of this format is the community. You’ll share stories over a campfire with people from around the globe, all while being led by our expert guides who know these tracks like their own backyards. Unlike “budget” tours that cut corners on safety or food, we focus on high-quality equipment and professional chefs to ensure your comfort in the wild.

Day-by-Day Itinerary 7 Days Tanzania Camping Safari

Your safari is carefully planned to maximize wildlife viewing while still giving you time to relax and enjoy the journey. Here’s what you can expect day by day.

Day 1: Arrival at Kilimanjaro – Transfer to Arusha

What to expect on your first day in Tanzania: Your journey begins in Arusha, the gateway to the Northern Circuit. You will settle in, meet your guide, and prepare your gear at a comfortable lodge before heading into the wild.

Upon landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), the humid air and the view of “Kili” on a clear day will let you know you’ve arrived. We will pick you up and whisk you away to Outpost Lodge in Arusha.

Pro-Tip: Don’t spend your first afternoon in your room. Walk to the local Maasai Market. It’s colorful, loud, and the perfect place to grab a “Shuka” (the red checkered blanket the Maasai wear). It’s the warmest thing you’ll find for those chilly safari nights.

Day 2: Tarangire National Park → Mto wa Mbu (Fanaka Campsite)

Why Tarangire is a must-see destination:

Tarangire is famous for its massive elephant herds and ancient Baobab trees. It offers a raw, rugged landscape that feels more “wild” than many other parks, especially during the dry season.

After a hearty breakfast, we leave the city behind. Within two hours, you’ll see the silhouettes of Baobab trees—they look like they were planted upside down! We spend the day tracking elephants that congregate around the Tarangire River.

Local Insight: Most tourists rush to the Serengeti, but Tarangire is where the magic happens in 2026. We’ve seen herds of 300 elephants here. Look for the “pythons in the trees”—Tarangire is one of the few places where snakes frequently lounge in the branches to stay cool.

As the sun sets, we head to Fanaka Campsite & Lodges in Mto wa Mbu. This is a vibrant village where over 120 tribes live together.

About Tarangire National Park

The park offers excellent game viewing year-round, with diverse landscapes and rich wildlife, making it a perfect addition to any safari with Tanzania Safari Experience.

Day 3: Entering the Endless Plains (The Serengeti)

What makes the Serengeti the world’s best park: The Serengeti is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for the Great Migration. Its vast, open grasslands provide the best predator-prey sightings on the planet, including lions, leopards, and cheetahs.

Today is a long drive, but the views as you climb the Ngorongoro Highlands are breathtaking. We descend into the Serengeti, which means “Endless Plains” in the Maa language. You will start your first game drive as soon as we pass the gate.

We will be pitching our tents at Seronera Public Camp. Warning: There are no fences here. When I say you are in the wild, I mean it. You might see a buffalo grazing five meters from your tent. Don’t worry—our camp chefs and guides have done this for decades. Just never keep food (especially citrus or snacks) inside your tent!

Day 4: Full Day Serengeti Central Experience

How to maximize your time in the Serengeti: Spend a full day exploring the Seronera Valley, focusing on “Kopjes” (rock outcrops). These rocks are the favorite hiding spots for lions and leopards looking for a high vantage point.

We wake up at 5:30 AM. Why? Because the cats are most active before the sun gets too hot. There is nothing like seeing a pride of lions on a kill while the mist is still rising off the grass.

The Serengeti “Secret”: Everyone looks at the ground, but I want you to look up. The Serengeti is a bird-watcher’s paradise. Keep an eye out for the Lilac-breasted Roller—its feathers have every color of the rainbow.

On Day 4 in Serengeti, you have the option to experience a hot air balloon safari at sunrise. You’ll float silently above the plains as the sun rises, spotting wildlife from a completely different perspective. After landing, a bush breakfast is served in the wild—simple, but unforgettable.

Day 5: Serengeti to the Rim of the World

What to expect when moving to Ngorongoro: The transition from the hot, dry Serengeti to the cool, misty Ngorongoro Highlands is dramatic. You will leave the plains behind for a camp situated directly on the crater’s edge.

We enjoy a final morning game drive in the Serengeti before heading toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The drive takes us through “Olduvai Gorge,” where some of the oldest human remains were found.

Tonight, we sleep at Ngorongoro Simba Campsite. Pro-Tip: Wear your heavy fleece and a beanie. Because the camp is on the crater rim (about 2,300 meters high), it gets very cold—sometimes 5°C! The “Simba” (Lion) camp is famous for the resident elephants that occasionally drink from the water tanks near the showers.

Day 6: The "Eighth Wonder of the World" (Ngorongoro Crater)

Why the Ngorongoro Crater is unique:

The Crater is the world’s largest inactive, intact volcanic caldera. It acts as a natural enclosure for 30,000 animals, including the rare Black Rhino, making sightings incredibly easy and frequent.

We descend 600 meters down into the crater floor. It’s like entering a “Lost World.” In one day, you can see “The Big Five”: Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Buffalo, and the elusive Black Rhino.

After a lunch by the hippo pool, we drive back to Arusha for a well-deserved shower and a soft bed at Outpost Lodge.

Day 7: Waterfalls and Goodbyes

How to spend your last day in Arusha: Visit the foothills of Mount Meru for a hike to a hidden waterfall. This provides a peaceful, green contrast to the dusty safari plains before you head to the airport.

Before your flight, we take a short trip to the Materuni or Arusha waterfalls. It’s a chance to stretch your legs and see the lush coffee plantations that make Tanzania famous. We then provide a transfer to the airport for your journey home or your flight to Zanzibar.
